Holi 2027

Colour, water and spring. In northern Europe the Holi parties are outdoor, ticketed and usually a few weeks after the date — because March is cold.

What Holi is

Holi is the spring full-moon festival: a bonfire the night before (Holika Dahan) and a morning of throwing coloured powder and water at everyone in reach. It is the least formal of the big festivals and the easiest to invite friends of any background to.

Abroad it has to wait for weather. Associations and student groups run Holi events in parks and on campuses from late March to May, with organic gulal, a DJ and a hose; restaurants and bars host indoor “Holi nights” closer to the actual date. Bring clothes you are prepared to lose.

Holi in Belgium

Brussels, Leuven, Ghent and Antwerp all have outdoor Holi events between late March and May, most run by the student associations and ticketed.

Holi in Germany

Colour festivals run in city parks from late March into spring, organised by Indian associations and universities. Open-air events need permits, so most are ticketed and held on one fixed weekend.

Holi in the Netherlands

The largest Holi parties are in Amsterdam and The Hague, several of them commercial festivals that draw a mostly non-Indian crowd; the community’s own are in Amstelveen and Eindhoven.

Holi in the UK

Holi fills parks and venues from late March: colour festivals in London, Leicester and Birmingham, student-society Holi on university lawns across the country, and Holika Dahan bonfires at temples the night before.

If it is your first one abroad

  • Oil your hair and skin beforehand and the colour washes out; old white clothes show it best.
  • Only organic, skin-safe gulal is sold at community events — do not bring your own from an unknown source.
  • Most events are family-friendly in the afternoon and turn into a party after dark.

When is Holi in 2027?
22 March 2027, with Holika Dahan on the evening of 21 March. Holi 2026 was on 4 March.
Why are Holi events weeks after the date?
Because it is an outdoor festival and March in northern Europe is cold. Organisers wait for April or May weather; the events are posted on this page as they are announced.
